Recently, we began an online educational/interactive Workshop for Former Members of High Demand Groups or Cults, including those born and/or raised in them, and current or past partners of those involved: Behave Believe Become -- Or Not! Stepping over the threshold into this increasingly popular format for workshops or trainings via Zoom (Hipaa-compliant) is exciting and effective, reaching people nationwide where specific support may not be available, in the comfort of their homes. I require at least two individual consultations prior to participation in the workshop so I can use my best judgment to ascertain if the workshop seems to be a preferred option. This workshop is not group therapy. Most of the participants have worked with me individually or in group for a period of time so I am aware of their history, needs, and goals.
Along with the discussion and exploration of topics that participants address, relevant slides from a PowerPoint presentation are seen by all of us in workshop as part of the educational component. Topics include: cult or high demand group definitions; similarities with domestic abusive partners, addicted family systems, cult leaders and cults; process of recruitment and indoctrination; vulnerabilities to becoming a "true believer"; characteristic themes in thought reform techniques; trauma and loss; effective skills; self-care; reclaiming and reconnecting to oneself; creating a life of one's own making; connecting to mainstream society. I am deeply touched by the mutual support, compassion, and honesty participants have for one another. During the time online, all of us are seen in small squares and heard when we talk.
The schedule for Behave Believe Become or Not! is currently every other Saturday from 9:00 - 10:30 PST. Breaks are taken for holidays. If you decide to participate, you will need a video camera for you PC. Some participants use their IPhones to be involved. I email directions and informed consent forms prior to the workshop for your review. Downloading Zoom is easy as are the steps for participation.
